Small Portfolio
(20-25 people)
Group giving starts working straight away. Below is a example* portfolio, based on applications we have received at Empath, that could be funded over a year by just 20 people making a monthly donation.
*actual projects funded may differ from this list
- Health:
funding cystic fibrosis research. - Global poverty & disaster relief:
emergency supplies to help the food crisis in Africa. - Children:
providing holidays for terminally ill children using hospice services. - UK fuel poverty:
funding an advisor to help some of the most vulnerable people in the UK to save money on their heating bills, helping to reduce the number of people freezing to death in their own homes. - Disabled care:
purchasing specially-tailored mobility aids to keep multiple sclerosis sufferers out of wheelchairs. - Elderly care:
training telephone volunteers to make regular calls to lonely, elderly people.
How is this different to what I can do already?
Already this group portfolio exhibits significant improvements over individual giving, such as:
- Self-containment – half of the grants here approach full funding, so the projects are less reliant on further donation
- Varied objects – there’s no bias towards a single cause; this is the starting point for covering the whole charitable sector.
- Access – several of these projects would not be advertised to individuals for financial reasons, even though they fall within the scope of individual charity.
- Wide range – there are six projects here, all with a significant level of funding. How does this compare with an individual’s giving options?
This is a starting point that’s within everyone’s reach. At Empath, we’ll be expanding from this starting point, covering even more and filling in the gaps as more people join in.
